02-25-18 Crossen Creek Signage in Honor of Past President Jim Crossen

“Crossen Creek" was formally established on February 1st. Paul Smith wanted to create a permanent recognition for the Founding President of the Old Stone Dock Association. He figured that if we talked about the rip-rap artery that cleans run-off water into Salt Pond as Crossen Creek, then after a year or so, we ought to be able to label it as such. Founding President Jim Crossen was informed of our intention at the Annual Meeting at the Beach Breeze Inn in December 2017.  OSDA member Locust Sign Company made the sign to look like the sign that has long identified "Fresh River."  Newly elected OSDA President Jay Thayer stepped up to prepare all the mounting materials to ensure an attractive and sound footing. He then led the team to erect the sign on a beautiful winter morning. As soon as the sign was in place, the erecting committee of Board Member Paul Smith, President Jay Thayer and Immediate Past President Kevin Doyle went to Jim's house to escort him down to Crossen Creek for inspection. Jim is delighted with the honor. The accompanying pictures tell the story. You are all encouraged to check out the sign for yourselves. We're all proud of you Jim! 12-03-17 Holiday Party at ShoreWay Acres – Recap of events (1-1-18)

On Sunday, 12/03/17 the day started out with Old Stone Dock members participating in the Falmouth Christmas Parade. Trent and Jacob Tessier (Kevin Doyle's grandsons) carried the banner which was made in 2016 by OSD member Kathy Hall depicting the OSD Bicentennial (1817-2017). Members Kevin Doyle, Polly Thayer, Jay Thayer and Mike Herlihy proudly walked behind the banner and waved to parade goers along the way (see feature picture). The Annual after the Parade Holiday Party hosted by OSD members Dorie and Greg Ketterer took place at ShoreWay Acres Inn from 2 to 4 p.m.  It was attended by over 100 members and guests including several public officials.   Dorie and Greg (see picture below) were the perfect hosts and there was a delicious buffet enjoyed by all.  The clam chowder bowls are always a favorite along with the most delicious sides and deserts. Rebecca Bevilacqua, Cindy Lehtinen and Bob Lehtinen welcomed guests at the registration table. The children enjoyed face painting by OSDA member Kathy Hall and gingerbread house decorating sponsored by OSDA members Dorie & Greg Ketterer of ShoreWay Acres. The Charlie Jamieson Duo entertained the guests with popular tunes and Christmas favorites. The Old Stone Dock Logo Wear table was manned by Steve Saunders and Terry Saunders and included new windbreakers, pink caps and green caps. Other items included T-shirts, sweatshirts, canvas bags, etchings of the dock and Old Stone Dock note cards. Kevin Doyle reviewed many of the association’s accomplishments this past year, asked new members to stand and introduce themselves and announced the guests in attendance. Police Chief  Edward Dunn and Town Manager Julian Suso each addressed the crowd.  Jim Crossen was presented a ‘Crossen’s Creek’ sign that will be put in place soon. The gavel was then turned over from Outgoing President Kevin Doyle to new President, Jay Thayer. Jay thanked outgoing president Kevin Doyle for all his efforts over the past several years.  Kevin was presented with an OSD windbreaker and cap as well as an autographed book that Anne Prior had picked out for him. Committee Members Pat Keck, Polly Thayer and Terry Saunders had solicited the Falmouth Village Business in November and they were extremely generous in providing door prizes for our guests.  Below is a list of the donors and recipients.  This list of local business as well as others who assist us throughout the year can be found on the OSDA Events Page under "Local Business Supporters".  Please be sure to shop or eat at these fine establishments and thank them for their assistance in making this year’s event so special.   12-03-17 ShoreWay Acres Hosts Dorie & Greg Ketterer at OSDA 14th Annual Holiday Party               12-03-17 Incoming President Jay Thayer presenting gift of OSD Windbreaker to Outgoing President Kevin Doyle.                 12-03-17 Guests at the OSDA Holiday Party 1 12-03-17 Guests at the OSDA Holiday Party 2 12-03-17 [...]

11-01-17 After the Storm E-mail to members – Pics 10-29-17 to 11-05-17

Hi Neighbor! Many of you have "gone home" already, so you may have missed the aftermath of the storm that rolled up the coast over the weekend.  My son was in the cottage and took the photos that follow.   They are at the foot of Mill Road and across Surf Drive to look left, right, and center from the beach path. Rebecca Bevilacqua and Terry Saunders also took some shots that are posted on the website: oldstonedock.com.  Falmouth Enterprise Editor Bill Hough went down to take pictures, too, so there should be a good spread in the paper on Friday.  I'll try to find out what the plan is for remediation, and I'll keep you posted if I hear anything of value. ps  Don't forget the Falmouth Christmas Parade and Old Stone Dock Association Christmas Party at ShoreWay Acres on Sunday, December 3rd.  More to follow soon  . . .      Kevin M Doyle, President Pictures from Kevin Doyle (taken by his son on 10/30/17) Pictures from Rebecca Bevilacqua (taken on 10/31/17) Pictures from Terry Saunders (taken on 10/31/17 dawn and dusk) Pictures from Gabrielle Milne (taken on 11/01/17) Pictures from Terry Saunders (taken on 11/05/17) Kevin Doyle Surf Drive Beach Erosion 10-30-17 Mill Rd 1 IMG_1754 Kevin Doyle Surf Drive Beach Erosion 10-30-17 Mill Rd 2 IMG_1755 Kevin Doyle Surf Drive Beach Erosion 10-30-17 Mill Rd 3 IMG_1756 Kevin Doyle, After the Storm 10-30-17 Mill Rd 4 IMG_1757 Rebecca Bevilacqua Surf Drive Beach Erosion 10-31-17 Kiddie 144559 Rebecca Bevilacqua Surf Drive Beach Erosion 10-31-17 Shore 144641 Rebecca Bevilacqua 10-31-17 Mill Rd 1 150426RB 10-31-17 Fresh River 145953 Rebecca Bevilacqua Beach Erosion 10-31-17 Mill Rd 1 150426 ............ 10-06-17 Falmouth Art Center Opening Reception – Old Stone Dock Artwork and Prose

On Friday evening, October 6, 2017 The Falmouth Art Center at 137 Gifford Street, Falmouth held their opening reception from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. for their show - Reflecting on our Past: The Old Stone Dock Bicentennial. Artwork and Prose were by Falmouth High School Students. It was a full house and enjoyed by all who attended. What a terrific tribute this was to recognize the spirit and talent of the Falmouth students. The students invested a lot of time and talent to help us celebrate the Bicentennial year of the Old Stone Dock.   The Old Stone Dock has played a central role in the life of the town for 200 years, yet few are aware of the lifeline it was for commerce to ports along the East Coast before it became the recreational asset is today. Many thanks to their teachers for getting behind the initiative and inspiring their students to appreciate history and find creative ways to express it.  Thanks to Suzy Bergman and the Art Center for making time in the main gallery to showcase the students' achievements and encourage their participation in the arts. All of us in the Old Stone Dock Association applaud your partnership and thank you for all you have done to recognize this impressive historic milestone. The show will run from September 20, 2017 to October 16, 2017.

As guests arrived they were greeted by Board Member, Terry Saunders. She manned a table where Old Stone Dock note cards, caps and bags were available for sale.  There was also a poster board showing many of the activities the OSDA participated in during the past year as well as a handout listing the activities.  Jane Baker, Art Teacher at Falmouth High School loaned art work prepared by her students earlier in the year of the dock and other points of interest in Falmouth.  Board Member, Rebecca Bevilacqua discussed membership opportunities with guests as well. A wonderful time was had by all. Everyone walked away knowing more about our neighborhood, the monuments and ‘The Old Stone Dock’ as it started out, changed and as it is today.  Thank you Kevin for sharing your enthusiasm for the Old Stone Dock and its 200th Anniversary 1817 – 2017. 09-23-17 Guests at Falmouth Museum on the Green listening to speaker Kevin Doyle Paintings by Falmouth, MA School Students 1 of 2 Paintings by Falmouth, MA School Students 2 of 2

08-23-17 Old Stone Dock Association presents three $500 checks for tuition assistance

The Scholarship Committee consisted of Chairman Jim Crossen and members Mike Herlihy and Terry Saunders. It is through the generosity of our members that we were able to provide 3 $500 awards this year.   Since the recipients were already back to school when the annual meeting was held in September the checks were mailed to the recipients on August 23, 2017. Our first recipient was Meghan Doherty.   Meghan is attending St. Michaels College in Colchester, Vermont and pursuing a degree in Business.  Her parents are OSD Members Sean and Rebecca Doherty.  They have a home on Stratford Road.  Meghan graduated from Stoughton High School and played ice hockey for her school and club teams.  She was a volunteer tutor.  One of her summer jobs was to work at Pies a la mode.  She said she’d love to open an eatery in Falmouth that caters to people with food allergies. Our 2nd recipient was Emily Doyle.   Emily is pursuing a degree in Engineering at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.  Her grandfather is our President, Kevin Doyle who has a home on Mill Road.  Emily graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans with a 4.0 GPA.  She was co-captain of her cross country team and president of the National Honor Society her senior year.  Her volunteer work includes work with her church and a mission to the Dominican Republic.  She became certified as a life guard at Surf Drive Beach and has participated in the Falmouth Triathlon. Our 3rd recipient was Calvin Kinghorn. Calvin is attending Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine and pursuing a degree in Economics and Physics.  His Grandmother Melanie Karp has a home on Bywater Court.  Calvin graduated from Noble and Greenough School in Dedham.  He was on the crew team as well as the Varsity Ice Hockey Team.  He was also a dedicated percussionist and guitarist and has played with the Drum Ensemble and various student bands.  Calvin has logged over 100 hours as an academic and test prep tutor and member of the Leadership Council at school.  Calvin recalls fondly finding crabs and catching fish at Surf Drive Beach as a youngster.
