07-31-17 Lifeguard and Parking Lot Attendants Appreciation Breakfast

Shortly after the sun came up on Monday, July 31st the Old Stone Dock Association volunteers set up our 2nd Annual Beach Staff Appreciation Breakfast at the Ellen T. Mitchell Bath House on Surf Drive Beach and then the parking attendants and lifeguards arrived along with their supervisors. They really seemed to appreciate and enjoy the breakfast break in the midst of their summer season and that morning expressed their appreciation many times. The lifeguards and other beach staff got their chance to say goodbye to Don Hoffer and we welcomed Bruce Mogardo. Town manager, Julian Suso expressed Falmouth's thanks and said for many tourists they are the welcoming face of the town. Breakfast ended abruptly when supervisors blew the whistle and yelled "grab some fruit and head to your beaches." Thanks to OSDA members Anne Prior (event Chairperson), Jack Driscoll, Mike Herlihy, Steve Saunders, Jim Fox and Sally Colacicco who helped and thanks to Lenny of the beach staff who always keeps the flowers in the window boxes looking great.

07-16-17 Falmouth Triathlon at Surf Drive Beach

The Falmouth Triathlon took place on Sunday, 07/16/17 at Surf Drive Beach. New England Endurance Events, the sponsor is located on Cape Cod, and is fully immersed in the Southeastern Massachusetts triathlon and running communities.  Their management and staff are all current athletes.  Our contact was Kathleen Walker who is a seasoned triathlete, a USA Triathlon certified race director and a Red Cross certified lifeguard. She has been active in triathlon event production since 2003 for races both on and off Cape including assisting the race directors of both the Hyannis Sprint Triathlon and the Falmouth Triathlon.  For the past three years she has been the director of two annual triathlons (Wellfleet Sprint Triathlon and Gut Check Triathlon) as well as two road running races — all located on Cape Cod. The course is unique for its 600 yards (1/3 mile ~) warm salt-water swim, a 9 mile scenic bike ride that climbs to the majestic Nobska Point Light, and a 5k (3.1 mile) run entirely alongside Surf Drive Beach.           Participants were notified that there will be NO parking at race site OR on Falmouth’s Main Street. Primary parking sites were the Mullen School, Lawrence School and Falmouth Marine Park (all less than one mile from venue).  All competitors received an athlete’s guide prior to the event with essential parking information. Additionally, police and staff were posted at all entrances to the race venue, blocking access by vehicles and directing participants to approved parking lots.  Cooperation by all is critical to the continued approval of this event by the town. The Old Stone Dock Association was called upon to assist with traffic control. The Police Department detail was headed by Sergeant Michael Simoneau. Old Stone Dock volunteers were at their posts from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and their assignments are listed below. Madeleine Marken - Locust/Mill Anne Prior - Locust/Mill Mike Herlihy - Main/Walker Rocco Maffei - Main/Walker Richard Worob - Main / Shore Street Extension Steve Saunders - Katharine Lee Bates / Mullen School David Colacicco - Main / Library Lane Kevin Doyle - Main / Shore Sergeant Michael Simoneau – Main / Shore Charlie Deignan - Shore/Clinton (missed photo op) Richard Prior - Roving Donut and Coffee Patrol Terry Saunders – Roving Bike Photographer Story reported by Terry Saunders

Just a quick note to tell you what an honor it was to represent you all in receiving the Historical Society's Heritage Award this year.  This is obviously a special year for us as we celebrate 200 years of the Old Stone Dock's service to the community. There were about 125 folks at the dinner that honored us and the Garden Club for our contributions to the preservation, beautification, and betterment of the town.  We displayed some of the art and poetry of the high school students' recognition of the Bicentennial that will be displayed at the Art Center in the months ahead. We received many kind words and several citations to mark the occasion: the Award itself presented by Troy Clarkson on behalf of Historical Society's President Tamsen George a citation delivered by Town Manager Suso on behalf of the Selectmen a proclamation from the US House of Representatives from Congressman Keating a certificate from the Massachusetts House of Representatives from Mr. Vieira a citation from the Massachusetts Senate delivered by Senator Vinny deMacedo and a picture on the front page of the Enterprise of Senator deMacedo's presentation! It was a delightful evening and I thank all those who were able to attend that night and the many of you who sent along your congratulations for our achievements. It was also an appropriate time to recognize that our own Constable Jim Crossen is the only member who was present at the founding of the Association 55 years ago, and has NEVER missed a meeting!!    Happy 92nd Birthday, Jim, and thanks for your untiring leadership! kmd

04-2017 & 05-2017 OSD Members presents talks to Falmouth Students at Surf Drive Beach ‘Dock’

To commemorate and honor the Old Stone Dock Bicentennial celebration this year, we approached key administrators and faculty of the Falmouth School System to see if they would be interested in OSD board members delivering educational presentations to their students about the history of the Old Stone Dock and its important impact on the development and growth of Falmouth during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Dock was then the center of commerce for the growing town. Our offer was enthusiastically embraced by several departments: Sonia Tellier-Assistant Superintendent, Jane Baker-Art Department, Lauren Kenny-English Department, and Michael Feeney-History Department.  In April, OSD president Kevin Doyle delivered a power point presentation to 100 students and faculty (see prior story).  Days later, OSD board member and past president, Jim Fox presented to art students at the site of the dock to teach Dock history.  In early May, OSD vice president, Dan Braun met with English freshman honor students followed up with a final beach presentation by Kevin Doyle in June to history students.  We think all the students were impressed to learn that Surf Beach is not just a place for summer fun but is also a vital part of Falmouth and Massachusetts history.
